CHALLENGE

MWD Surveys

(Magnetic or Gyro)

Standard MWD measurements are often insufficient on their own due to magnetic interference, environmental effects, and sensor errors.

As surveys progress, positional uncertainty increases and is commonly represented as a growing error ellipse. As these ellipses expand and begin to overlap, the risk of collision increases.

When drilling, the actual bore position can statistically be located anywhere within the error ellipse.

Due to positional uncertainty, it can be challenging to confidently intersect small targets or maintain precise well spacing.

SOLUTIONS

Survey Management

Multiple techniques are applied to reduce the errors associated with standard MWD surveys.

Processes identify and correct tool errors and environmental influences, including magnetic storms, magnetic interference, and offset magnetic fields from nearby facilities.

By managing and applying high-quality survey data, positional uncertainty is reduced, resulting in a smaller error ellipse and improved well placement confidence.

Magnetic Ranging

Magnetic ranging is a direct measurement between sensors in the well and a known magnetic source.

Magnetic ranging is independent of local magnetic conditions and natural magnetic field variations.

Ranging shots accurately determine the position of offset targets and reset MWD-derived uncertainty to the lower ranging uncertainty.

As drilling progresses, periodic ranging measurements continually reset uncertainty, maintaining minimal positional error for precision intersects.
